John 2 Jesus Changes Water to Wine 1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come."
5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
6Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[a]
7Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.
8Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."
They did so, 9and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."
11This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
Jesus Clears the Temple 12After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. 13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!"
17His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."[b]
18Then the Jews demanded of him, "What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?"
19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."
20The Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" 21But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
23Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name.[c] 24But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. 25He did not need man's testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.

I heard an intersting commentary on Jesus and his mothers relationship a few years ago. But don't ask me to site a source.
It seems like Mary had to force him to perform his first public miracle; and he only did so reluctantly. But she knew he could do it.

Brutus... That is a fascinating observation...I've enjoyed pondering over it and will continue to do so... I also like to consider how reactive Jesus got with the merchants in the temple. We know that He was without sin, but by example see how reactive (angry?) He became. We are told elsewhere to be angry but do not sin in our anger...What does that look like???Hmmmmmm...Similar situation with the wine...Ok to drink but not ok to be drunk.... Good stuff...I'll check back later...

On first read this section of scripture sounds like Jesus is dis'ing his mom..... But to me it almost sounds like Jesus looks over at Mary after she apprises Him of the situation and says "Now??!! You want me to use my power now?? Nah.... I don't know if I'm ready... I don't know if I should... Now??!! Common ma, do I gotta???"
I believe Jesus had a close and loving relationship with his mother. I believe she knew exactly what she was doing when she told Jesus the wine was gone. Be careful to note that Mary did not tell Him what to do. She left the action completely up to Him. Jesus was aware that his mother knew he could do something about this situation to help... She was already convinced of His awesome power... Even though it had not been revealed yet.
And yet... Jesus had compassion on the situation and turned the water into wine.... He didn't have to. He stated that "His time had not yet come"... Which ment that He didn't want to reveal His power to the movers and shakers because it wasn't time yet... So He did this miracle on the sly... Only the servants and a few others knew. Plus, He didn't make some cheep boons farm brew... He made the good stuff!!

Well not so meek and mild huh? Our perspective on Jesus is turned on its ear in the passage. He thrashed these guys that were hindering Gods people from true worship.
How many times does this happen in our modern day? How many posers do we find in the Church these days that would rather make it all about being "good" and sanitized instead of real and passionate? Isn't worshiping our risen savior supposed to be more about an inward change and a desire to serve Him rather than a place to show how holy we are?
I mean, what is church all about if it isn't about drawing closer to Jesus? and doesn't that mean being real and honest with our junk before him? When did we get the idea that we had to "clean up" before we went to the house of the Lord? He said that our righteousness was as filthy rags... So what do you think he thinks of our sins? He's not looking for us to "get right" before we come to Him... He's the one that makes us right... It's His righteousness not ours that justifies us. Why do we think we need to prove that we've got it all together?
It's pride. It's all about us and our pride... Which is all about selfishness.
Our Churches should be a place to be real and worship our Lord and saviour, not a place where we can falsely admire each others black pot or kettle.
17His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."[b]

Jesus was talking about His own death and resurection here... But those fat heads missed the point. It wasn't about something they toiled and built... It was about the saviour of our souls.
